There are various types of online businesses. There are the side-hustles that pay you an extra $250-$500 a month and require very little of your time.

How Much Could You REALISTICALLY Earn with Your Own Online Business?

When I first started my Youtube Channel over 5 years ago, I had no idea what it might become. In fact, my Wife and I had numerous arguments over whether I should even be spending time publishing more videos.

The thought process was, if the videos weren’t leading to revenue NOW, then they weren’t worth producing. My time was better spent billing by the hour for my law practice.

Now, my business has reached a point where the income I earn from my online business far exceeds the income I earn from my law practice.

So it’s funny to me when people ask me… “Jim, you are a lawyer, why are you wasting your time with online business?”

And the honest truth is that I can earn significantly more money from my online business than I can earn billing hours with my law firm.

Let’s do some math so that you understand.

As a lawyer that has been practicing as long as I have, I can reasonably charge about $350/hour. (I actually charge more than that, but let’s use this number as a guide).

If I worked a full 40 hour work-week, and had enough clients to keep me busy full-time, I could probably bill about 20 hours a week, and that would be pushing it. I would need additional time for marketing, meeting with potential clients and referral sources, etc.

Assuming I took off 4 weeks per year for vacation and holidays, I could bill 960 hours per year. That comes out to $336,000 in total revenue, and assumes that all my clients paid their bills on time.

To do this, I would have to hire a full-time paralegal, and have a bunch of other expenses related to running a law practice such as rent, a receptionist, a marketing company to generate new leads, etc. 

If my profit was 30%, that would be a decent number for a law firm. That comes out to $100,000 roughly for my take home pay, not counting taxes, savings, etc. 

Would this be a nice income? Yes, of course. But it would also come with the additional stress of individual client work, late nights meeting client deadlines and preparing for court, and the common frustrations and difficulties that come with negotiating settlements with other attorneys.

What does an Online Business look like financially?

There are multiple ways to earn income online. Here I want to address two potential models that are great for people that are just getting started with an online business. The first is selling courses, and the second is the membership model.

Selling Courses

For comparisons sake, what does it look like to run an online business? How much could you realistically earn?

Let’s say you were able to create a one-off product that you could sell for $100. This is not that uncommon, and would be fairly easy to create.

If you sold 5 of those a month - that’s 1 sale a week, you could earn an extra $500 a month or $6,000 a year. Not bad for a side hustle.

Let’s say you started to ramp things up and in addition to that entry level product, you added on a $500 product and sold 2 of those per month. Now, instead of earning $500 a month, you are earning $1,500 per month - a total of $18,000 per year.

I’ve seen other online entrepreneurs start this way and quickly scale to multiple sales a DAY as their website and social media platforms start to gain some traction. Imagine instead of selling 5 of those $100 products a month, you started selling 5 a week. And instead of selling 2 of those $500 products a month, you started selling 2 of those a week.

That $1,500 monthly income has now risen to $6,500 a month or $78,000 a year.

Would that be enough to allow you to quit your job?

Selling Memberships

With a membership model, the numbers can scale even faster. 

Imagine selling a $50 per month membership. If you could bring on 100 students, that would be $5,000 per month, or $60,000 per year in recurring revenue!

Honestly, if all you needed was more information, you would have found it already.
